One of the veterans killed when a train crashed into a parade float in Texas on Thursday is being hailed as a “hero” for saving his wife just moments before he lost his own life. Joshua Michael, a 34-year-old Army staff sergeant and recipient of two Purple Heart decorations, pushed his wife, Daylyn, off the trailer just before the train hit, according to a family friend. At least 17 people were injured, one critically, and four were killed as a result of the accident, city officials said. Twenty-four veterans and their spouses were on the tractor-trailer, according to the Midland Reporter-Telegram.

A federal judge upheld Ohio's new restrictions on exotic animals Thursday after several owners sued the state over the law. U.S. District Court Judge George Smith in Columbus sided with the state, saying that the court recognizes some businesses may be negatively affected and some owners may not be able to keep their beloved animals but that the owners failed to prove constitutional rights were violated. The court said the case came down to the public interest and protecting the public from potential dangers of exotic animals.
