Senior Advisor to the President David Plouffe just sent the message below to the White House email list, describing how stories from real people are making a difference in the fight to extend the tax cuts for the middle class. If you didn't get the email, be sure to sign up. Hello -- Unless Congress acts, middle-class income taxes are going up on January 1. That's why President Obama is asking people to speak out, and it's why so many folks from across the country are taking him up on that request. Now we're doing everything we can to make sure those voices become part of the debate here in Washington. We're putting these stories on the front page of the White House website. We're sharing them on Facebook and Twitter.

American voters are sharply divided over how things went this year, and they continue to give President Obama mixed reviews.  Meanwhile, voters are almost twice as likely to say Obama will be one of the country’s “worst” presidents as to say he will be one of the “greatest,” according to a year-end Fox News poll released Thursday. Some 42 percent of voters feel 2012 was a good year, while 41 percent say it was bad.  Another 15 percent have mixed feelings.   Some 57 percent of Democrats say 2012 was a good year, while the exact same number of Republicans -- 57 percent -- feels the opposite.  Plus, independents split:  40 percent good, 40 percent bad.   The divide continues on the economy: 79 percent of Democrats think the economy will be better a year from now, while 70 percent of Republicans say it will be worse.

  • Aggregate Sentiment is meant to be an indicator of an individual's overall sentiment.
  • The Mean is meant to be an indicator of an individual's average comment sentiment.
  • The Standard Deviation, when there are enough quotes, will indicate an individual's consistency of sentiment (i.e. a Standard Deviation of 0 would mean they were very consistent in their sentiment and 1 would mean they were very inconsistent).

Note that quote stats are likely to be meaningless beyond the aggregate score due to the tiny sample size. However, they are always provided just in case you find something useful there.

Philadelphia, PA –  Philadelphia 76ers guard Jrue Holiday has a sprained left foot and will be a game-time decision for Friday's contest against the Pacers. Holiday sat out Thursday's practice with soreness in the foot and an X-ray came back negative for a fracture, but an MRI revealed the sprain. The four-year pro has averaged career-highs of 18. 4 points and 8. 9 assists over 22 games this season. If Holiday can not play in Indianapolis, coach Doug Collins said swingman Evan Turner will most likely start in his place.

(TOBY JORRIN/AFP/Getty Images) Washington, DC has been basking in unusually warm weather this week -- temperatures are stretching into the 70's -- but if anyone in the nation's Capitol is feeling a chill in the air, look no further than President Obama and House Speaker John Boehner. It seems like relations between the two of them have seldom been frostier. In fact, as ABC's Jake Tapper reports, Boehner came to the White House last night for President Obama's annual holiday party for members of Congress, but the Speaker didn't pose for a photograph with the president as he has in the past and as other lawmakers did last night.

But enjoying the spooky treats of Halloween doesn't have to mean getting tricked by common myths and urban legends. From poisoned candy to vampires, read on for the truth about Halloween. It seems the perfect crime, albeit one out of a fairy tale: Wait for innocent kiddies to show up on your doorstep, then poison them with tainted Twix bars. The only problem is, this "stranger danger" just doesn't happen. In only one case has a child died from eating poisoned Halloween candy. The candy was planted by the 8-year-old boy's father in an attempt to get the child's life insurance money. The convicted murderer, Ronald Clark O'Bryan, was executed in 1984 for the 1974 crime.

What Will A U.N. Upgrade Mean For Palestinians? | Reduction

What Will A U.N. Upgrade Mean For Palestinians?

Excerpt:

At the United Nations this afternoon, the General Assembly is expected to overwhelmingly approve a resolution that would shift the status of Palestinians from that of a "non-member observer entity" to a "non-member observer state." The move will be made over the objections of Israel, the U.S. and with the likely abstention of another major power, Great Britain. What does changing one word for another do? As a non-member observer state, Palestinians would have the same status as the Vatican. And NPR's Philip Reeves reported on Morning Edition that the upgrade "makes it easier for the Palestinians to join other U.N. bodies. Controversially, that includes the International Criminal Court," where Palestinians might "launch proceedings against Israeli officials alleging war crimes or other abuses." Going to that court, of course, could further set back the already troubled Mideast peace process.
